Jubilee Country Park-Its History and Heritage

To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, a new book has been released looking back at the history of a Petts Wood/Bickley park named in commemoration of the Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee – Jubilee Country Park.
“Jubilee Country Park-Its History and Heritage” by Jennie Randall, Chairman of the Friends of Jubilee Country Park for 9 years, has been produced as a result of eight years of extensive research into the history of the landscape that now forms the Park. The book takes the reader on a journey through time from the Bronze Age to 2012. It is a compilation of stories, anecdotes, poems, drawings, photographs, newspaper accounts and extracts from a wide variety of sources each of which has contributed to the fascinating history and heritage of the beautiful Local Nature Reserve that is Jubilee Country Park. Many of the illustrations have never previously been published.
The book explains how the conservation work the Friends group does today continues traditional rural practices which have been carried out for centuries. It investigates the astonishingly diverse range of activities which have taken place over the centuries within the sixty two acres which today make up the park. Find out what “bumping” was. Discover what “ ragging” entailed. Read the curious story of Bob’s Land. Learn more about the important strategic role of Thornet Wood Gun Site during the Second World War - and much more besides!
All profits from the sale of the book go towards the work of the Friends of Jubilee Country Park. The book, priced at only £5, is available now from

It also includes many previously unseen photographs and much new information which has been discovered as a result of extensive historical research.
Includes a Roll of Honour of all those who were killed as a result of the explosion, listing their names, ages, addresses and occupations.
Examines the development of the V2 rocket and the reaction of the local media at the time to the devastating effects of this terrible weapon. There is also a section looking into the history of the Crooked Billet and how it may have acquired its distinctive name.
